In bizarre circumstances Wayne Newby was denied a better outcome to last weekend’s Nitro Champs at Western Sydney International Dragway (WSID), that resulted in his controversial elimination from the opening round.
The former multiple Australian Champion , after qualifying seventh faced Debbie Reed in the opening round of eliminations for the Top Alcohol category. Newby managed take the win and advance through to the semi-final, well so he thought. His rival, Reed, then lodged a protest claiming that her lane had too much oil on it and demanded a re-run of the match-up between Newby and herself. ANDRA race officials accepted Reed’s protest and called for a re-run to the match up. As it turned out, Newby suffered a gearbox at the start of the re-run and that handed a comfortable victory to Reed.
As one would imagine Newby was very disappointed with the outcome to the opening round of eliminations that brought a premature end to his Nitro Champs weekend.
Newby says that his hard feelings towards to the protest is not sour grapes because he was defeated it’s for what’s right and what’s wrong.
“If I had went onto the semi-finals I would have broken the gearbox shaft anyway, but it’s not about that, it’s about the whole principal of the matter,” the JBS Tools / Fabre Australia supported Dragster driver expressed.
Winless so far in the 2008/09 Australian Championship, Newby will travel up to Queensland’s Willowbank Raceway over the June Long Weekend for the annual Winter Nationals which is the eighth and final round of the Australian Championship and it where he has one final shot to post a victory.
